Ink paintings featuring bold compositions are an attractive part of Jakuchū’s repertoire. He depicted vegetables in a number of other paintings as well and this undoubtedly has a connection with the family business he inherited. When he was running his family’s vegetable shop in the Nishiki-kōji area of Kyoto, which was the so-called “kitchen” of Kyoto, Jakuchū must have carefully observed the vegetables and fish displayed at his storefront and grasped their respective characteristics.
